When you have selected a few key items to hold onto, use them to springboard ideas or a theme for the décor. A whole room can be built around a single painting or sculpture.

If you have some key items you still love after all these years then aim to enhance them and give them a new lease of life. An old antique may have looked dated on a crowded dresser, but put it on its own in an alcove with a spotlight or coloured background and you get a great mix of old and new to liven up any room.

If you can't decide what to focus on then try a process of elimination. Collect all of the things you are considering and remove one or two each day until you are left with the items that really work for you.
