Is this better than a software app?

Great question. Lots of people are 'visual thinkers'. So when they use an app or software their brains can be consumed with figuring out how to make it work and get buried in the tech rather than finding the best plan. If that sounds like you then our kits are the perfect solution. If you still love looking at interiors magazines ... if you think a paper book is a welcome break from reading on a screen... or if you love th eidea of tactile real world planning rather than yet another app you are our people. Katie (modelrooms inventor) has worked with CAD professionally for over 20 years but leaned into magnetic planning for her own renovation. It made collaborating and communicating with her builder so much more 'human' and a lot quicker.

Do I need any special skills or equipment?

No, All our kits are designed to be blissfully intuitive and make planning easy & quick whether it is your first time creating a plan to scale or you are a seasoned pro. Our magnetic kits work out of the box and have scale templates to create each room and furnish it with multiple options to try out. So you can be sure the layout you are choosing is the best possible use of your space and the flow in your house is perfect. Test drive your house before you build a single block.

What if I have never drawn a scale plan before?

No problem. We literally did all the scaling work so you would not need to worry about that. As long as you use the included scale ruler to measure your magnetic plans you will see everything in your home as an exact scale plan of your home. The pieces have clear grapgic symbols to show what they represent and they are also coloured for further ease of use. So all the bathroom templates have blue, all the kitchen templates have yellow, and bedroom and livingroom are in orange. We also pack it in a tin so the spare magnets can be stored in the lid to keep them organized and ready to work.

Can I use this for rooms other than kitchens?

Our magnetic House Design Kit will plan all of the rooms in a standard house. It has kitchen, bathroom, bedroom & livingroom templates, as well as walls, windows, doors and stairs to 'draw' the plans before adding the furniture. It also has 3 different stair options, a title block and north point. we have literally included everything a standard architectural plan would include but simplified down into clear graphic pieces. Because they are magnetic they can be easily moved and tweaked an much as you need until your plan works.

What if I am planning a very large house, can I extend the kit?

Our House Design Kit works for up to 700 square feet and we sell additional base boards so you can extend the base as much as you need. There are more than enough templates to do up to 4 more boards.

3 Steps To Plan Your Perfect Kitchen

1. Start with the original kitchen plan and try to work out the problem areas and why they don't work.

Your kit will include people templates. These show the circulation space or flow of your kitchen. If you can identify what is not working you can fix it and not repeat the same mistakes.

2. Using the old plan start to move the walls, appliances and furniture templates and reveal a new layout for your kitchen in minutes.

The templates are designed to be graphic and easy to read, but all to scale. Non-designers can understand their plans as easily as seasoned designers.

3. Talk through the plans with friends & family. Get feedback, brainstorm your space and collaborate and share ideas quickly. Remember there are no crazy ideas at the brainstorming stage. Thinking outside the box can unlock some great workable ideas.

Good design is about finding the best plan and then applying the budget constraints to it. It rarely starts with the budget and limiting the ideas from the outset. Have some fun with the space first and refine later.
